The official language of Uttarakhand is Hindi, but it is spoken in diverse areas in different dialects. Kumaoni and Garhwali are mostly spoken here. Under the broad category 'Kumaon', the popular sub dialects are - Johri, Danapuria, Ascoti, Sirali, Gangola, Khasparjia, Faldakoti, Pachai, Rauchoubhaisi, Majh Kumaiya, Sorayali, Chaugharyali and Kumaiya. The sub-categories of the Garhwali dialect include Jaunsari, Sailani and Merchi. The major bids here are influenced by Sanskrit, Central Pahari, and Sauraseni Prakrit, and these languages are written in Devanagari script.
